Day 27, Wednesday, 19 June, Beloit to Tuttle Creek Lake Park (Manhattan)

The main character in today's story is the road. Our ride began early. We left breakfast around 7:35. We rode against a,moderate headwind for a while until we came to some road construction. I pho graphed some pigs while waiting to proceed. After the construction we rode one about 20. Miles of road prepared, for, replacing but not yet replaced. This meant 20 miles of riding on washboard. It tested the nuts, bolts, and welds in our bikes, the soft tissues in our buttocks, and the fillings in our teeth. After we reached the section of road not under repair, the road was great but the headwind stiffened. Throw in sets of moderate hills and a long way to travel and you have a day that reminds me of what the Wicked Witch said as she was melting, "Oh, what a cruel cruel world".

We seemed to move away from corn country to wheat country, with plenty of grassland and soybean in everywhere. The fields reminded me of the line, "with amber waves of grain", from America the Beautiful. As we approached Manhattan grassland and trees seemed more plentiful. We again rode for many miles without seeing much in the way of provisions.

We rode 95.31 miles at an average speed of 11.4 mph. My maximum speed was 24.1 mph.
