Day 24, Sunday, 16 June, North Platt to Lake Johnson

Today is a jumble of emotions. We followed US 30 against a slight headwind until we reached Gothenburg. Ann Anderson told is to visit the Pony Express Exhibit and that Gothenburg is where Frito-Lay collects all of its corn west of the Mississippi. We saw the Pony Express building and, following Ann's advice, headed south,. The headwind worsened and the terrain went from flat to hilly. We went for 30 miles without seeing a place to eat or buy food. I made Louis stop for a few minutes to chow down some salmon and crackers to keep from bonking.

At Elmont we faced a dilemma. With a possible storm approaching , we could ride 2 miles out of our way for a campsite that might not have showers or potable water, 7 miles for a nice campsite, or pay $59 for a room in a sub-tourist hotel. James and Billie Taylor came to our rescue. we loaded our bikes into the back of the truck and they drove us the 7 miles to the nice camp. We swam in Lake Johnson, showered, and cooked dinner by the lake in a small pavilion.

We rode 76.47 miles at an average speed of 12.1 mph. My maximum speed was 22.1 mph.

We saw wild turkeys.

We hit what I think is the halfway point for our trip, 1650 miles.
