Today was the first of two days on the GAP, the Great Allegheny Passage. The GAP is a rails to trials path the connects (almost) Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD. we started with a short ride to a breakfast restaurant. Stephanie joined us there and directed us for the short trip to meet the GAP. the GAP is a great bike trail. Since it is an old rail line, all the grades are slight. The path is typically one wide lane of smooth dirt with a scattering of fine gravel. We were going "uphill" easily at 12-14 mph. The path follows the Youghiogheny River and trees on one or both side of path created canopy on many segments. We followed the path to Confluence and camped at a campground that the US Army Corps of Engineers designed and operate.
We rode 67.01 miles at an average speed of 11.6 mph. My maximum speed was 32.8 mph.
